Gear Safe Tick Prevention

As we make our way into spring, many of us are itching to get outside and explore, which means it might be time to (re)treat your gear for ticks!

Apply Sawyer’s Permethrin spray every six weeks or six washes to protect yourself and your family from disease-carrying insects! Permethrin is safe to use on outdoor gear, scent-free after drying, and very effective against ticks and other disease-carrying pests. Treat your clothing and gear ahead of time to save yourself the headache of worrying about ticks.

How to use Permethrin Spray to prevent ticks, mosquitoes, and other insects:

1. Choose the proper clothing: Select the items you plan to wear outdoors, such as pants, socks, shoes, hats, long-sleeved shirts, etc.

2. Remember your gear: Permethrin spray is safe for all gear, so be sure to treat your backpacks, gaiters, sleeping bags, tents, etc.

3. Prepare the area: Find a well-ventilated outdoor space to apply the spray. Avoid windy conditions to prevent the spray from drifting away. (Permethrin is ineffective when applied to the skin, so avoid skin and eye contact).

4. Hang the clothes or gear: Hang or place the items you plan to treat in an open area, such as a clothesline or hanger. This will make the application process easier and ensure even coverage.

5. Shake it up: Shake the Sawyer Permethrin spray thoroughly to mix the contents.

6. Apply the spray: Hold the spray about 6 to 8 inches away from the fabric and spray an even coating, covering the entire gear surface. Apply enough to see a color change in the fabric, which is

4.5 ounces per outfit (shirt, pants, socks)

Tip: Every bottle of Permethrin will indicate how many outfits it will treat.

7. Allow drying time: Let any treated clothes or gear dry completely before wearing or packing them.

8. Reapply as necessary: Remember, the protection provided by Sawyer’s Permethrin spray lasts for six weeks or six washes.

Conclusion

While Sawyer Permethrin spray is highly effective in repelling ticks and other insects, taking additional precautions in tick-prone areas can be beneficial. Conduct regular tick checks, use insect repellent on exposed skin, and follow other recommended practices to minimize the risk of tick bites.
