Backcountry Coffee (think protein + energy)

Updated: Feb 28, 2022

Do you ever feel like you have to break up your perfect coffee routine when you leave home, hit the road, or take to the backcountry? Well, good news, YOU DON'T HAVE TO!

Not only is my coffee routine a matter of public safety, yes, I'm one of those, it's also a kickstart for my daily energy.

At home, I use a blender to whip up my magic joe, but when I'm away from the conveniences of my kitchen, I still get to enjoy my coffee.

Backcountry Joe:

1. 1 scoop or 1 packet of instant coffee.

2. 1/2 to 1 scoop of Wilderness Athlete Wild C8 MCT Powder *see code below for a discount on Wilderness Athlete.

3. 1/2 to 1 scoop of Wilderness Athlete Paleo(ish) Protein *see code below for a discount on Wilderness Athlete.

4. 1 scoop powdered creamer of choice. I use Laird Superfood Creamer and like it, but there are options here!

5. 8-10 oz of hot water.

If you can, combine these ingredients in a blender and whip them up. If you plan to take this off-grid, you can make your coffee ahead of time. Preplan how many days of coffee you will need and have them ready to go - 1 snack bag for each day.

  • Add all of the ingredients from above (minus the water) into a snack-size ziplock bag.

  • Pour all powdered contents into a cup and mix with 1-2 oz of COLD water - mix until all lumps are gone.

  • Boil 8-10 oz of water and pour over your premixed coffee goodness.

Premaking your coffee will also help limit the amount of micro trash you have when traveling or in the field.

The combination of caffeine, protein, and healthy fats will have you ready to take on the day without the crash of a sugary concoction. Not to mention, your muscles will be thankful for the extra protein for repair and recovery!
